Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area and Simon Fraser University

On top of Burnaby Mountain you can experience the world renowned architecture of Simon Fraser University surrounded by the natural wonders of the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area

A quick 15 minute bus ride from Production/University Station up to Simon Fraser University will put you on top of Burnaby Mountain at an elevation of 1200 feet above sea level. As the mountain highway rounds the last curve, the forest opens up to reveal the expansive Simon Fraser University Campus crowning the top of Burnaby Mountain. Featuring the inspiring and innovative architectural designs of Arthur Erickson, the campus, which opened in 1965, still has a remarkably modern look to it.

Take some time to explore the interesting architectural features around the campus - especially the Academic Quadrangle, just a short walk west of the Transit Exchange on top of the mountain. There are many restaurants and coffee shops located along the lower level of the Cornerstone Building adjacent to the upper transit exchange. From personal experience Natures Garden Organic Deli is a good choice for coffee and home style meals and the Himalayan Peak has good Indian cuisine.

From the SFU campus you can take any bus from the upper bus loop to the stop across from the residences (one stop past the "bus tunnels") where you can walk along a segment of the Trans Canada trail which starts just behind the Bus Shelter. After walking west along the trail for 10 - 15 minutes you will come into an open grassy area - part of the Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area. From this mountain top park you can enjoy some excellent views of Burrard Inlet, the North Shore Mountains and Vancouver. Other features of the park include a playground area, rose garden, numerous sculptures, and fine dining at Horizons Restaurant.
