Orpheum Theatre Vancouver
Vancouver's Orpheum Theatre, a beautifully restored heritage building from 1927 is home to the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra
Located at 761 Granville Street in Downtown Vancouver, the Orpheum Theatre has a rich history going back to 1927 when it first opened as a vaudeville theatre. When vaudeville died out in the early 1930's it became a movie house under Famous Players. In 1973 Famous Players was planning on completely gutting the inside and converting it to a multiplex cinema. You can easily see from the pictures why this plan was strongly opposed. After a public protest and fundraiser the plans where canceled.
Vancouver City bought the Orpheum in 1974 and closed it until 1977 for renovation and restoration. It has since been the home of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra as well as hosting many other live musical programs. and shows.
